RELEASE
from
THE PARKERSBURG ART CENTER
Subject: WV Art & Craft Guild 8th Biennial Exhibition
For more information, please call: Abby Hayhurst, Director 304-485-3859
The West Virginia Art & Craft Guild will open their eighth biennial exhibition with an
awards ceremony at the Parkersburg Art Center, in Parkersburg, WV, this Saturday November
20thfrom 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
The exhibition, which features 109 works of art and craft, was culled from more than 200
entries from all over West Virginia, as well as several other states. It includes creative
examples of sculpture, textiles, prints, painting, pottery, photography and jewelry.
The public is encouraged to attend the awards ceremony. Admission is free for ArtCenter
members, and there is a $5 charge for non-members. The
exhibition is made possible by financial assistance from the West Virginia Commission on
the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as the WV Art & Craft
Guild.
According to Kenneth Westfall, WVACG treasurer, entries were up and were more diversified.
This was a banner year for the competition, Westfall says. Weve
checked in some amazing examples of both art and craft....the jurors had a difficult time
eliminating works, which is a good problem to have. The two jurors for the
exhibit were Jackie Brown, Professor of Art and Department Chair, Frostburg State
University- Frostburg, MD and Kenn Morgan, Professor of Fine Arts, Bethany College-
Bethany, WV.They came to the ParkersburgArtCenter,
chose the pieces for inclusion into the exhibit, and selected the prize-winning works.
From the Jurors Statement: recognizing
that this exhibition showcases West Virginia's BEST art and craft the standards we were
expected to apply were extremely high. This process had seemed daunting at first, but as
we had selected the work for inclusion we had been commenting on our choices and therefore
the award winners were relatively easy for us to choose.
Abby Hayhurst, Director of the ParkersburgArtCenter, says, We are always delighted
to host this exhibition, made up of works by the finest artisans in our State. Area
residents love to see this show. It gives them a good place to bring holidays guests, to
see what great work is being done in West Virginia. It's also a good opportunity for us to
see new works and recruit new artists for later exhibits. We are grateful to the Guild for
choosing the ArtCenter, and to our sponsor, WesBanco, for making it possible for the
WVACG show to be on display in our facility.
Cash prizes will be awarded to thirteen artists: Regina Swim, Chris Hammer and Robin Dutch
of Charleston, Mike Bowen and Daniel Kaufmann of Huntington, Vernon Howell of
Barboursville, Pat Reese and Susan Ting of Morgantown, Cyndi Bolt of Wayne, Sheila Caim of
Creston, Dick Allowatt of St. Albans, and Sterling Smith of Martinsburg. Prizes will also
be awarded to out-of-state members of the Guild, including Taylor Woolwine of Rochester, NY
and Sharon Dugan of Sanborton, NH.
The Exhibition will be on display at the ArtCenter through December 29. On January 15,
2011, it will open at the WheelingArtisanCenter for a five-week run, and then travel to
the BeckleyArtCenter for a showing from March 12 to April 30, 2011.

& Craft Guild is a non-profit membership organization whose goal is to promote &
preserve art and craft and the creative lifestyle in West Virginia. Its projects include workshops, crafts fair

FROM: Becky Williamson EVENT: OGLEBAYFEST 2010 DATE: October 1-3
DETAILS
Dear Fellow Artisans,
As some of you may know, the West Virginia Art and Craft Guild have
an exhibitor space reserved for the Oglebayfest in Wheeling, WV on October 1-3.
My name is Becky Williamson and I will be coordinating the booth for the
Guild. I can be reached at: rwilliamson2233@suddenlink.net
or 304-615-2191.
Basically we will be using the same guidelines the Guild uses for the
West Virginia Arts and Crafts Fair in Ripley. Anyone exhibiting in the booth will
take a turn working the booth and sales area sometime during the show. All artisans will
receive 70% of their sales, with 30% going to the Guild. This 30% pays for the tent rental
fee and other expenses incurred by the Guild.
Our tent will be much smaller than what we have at the West Virginia
Arts and Crafts Fair in Ripley. It is only a 10x20 space, and as such, if we have a large
number of artisans/craftspeople who would like to display, then the amount of your goods
will need to be smaller in quantity. However, they can be restocked as sold, and you can
bring in new items daily.
While artist demonstrations are not required at Oglebayfest as they
are at WVACF, they are highly encouraged. Some of you may be interested in demonstrating.
I have already received several emails from people stating an
interest in attending. Until the number is firmed up, I am unable to give firm work times.
However, I am attaching a schedule that I believe will work.
We will not have the same display units that we use in Ripley.
Juliann has volunteered some shelving units. I am sure this will not work for all goods
being sold. Please let me know how you are going to display your items. Once everyone has
signed up, then we can decide what will work. We also need a cash register. The one we use
in Ripley belongs to Ken Westfall and he will be at another show, and therefore it is
unavailable to us.
The show hours and set up times are as follows:
Show Hours
Friday, October 1
Noon 7:00 p.m.
Saturday, October 2
10:00 a.m. 7:00 p.m.
Sunday, October 3
10:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m.
Set Up Hours
Thursday, Sept. 30
10:00 a.m. 7:00 p.m.
Friday, October 1
8:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m.
Sat. & Sun., Oct. 2 & 3
8:00 a.m. 9:00 a.m.
I will be unable to get to Wheeling on Thursday. I have class in
Marietta, Ohio from 1:00pm to 4:00pm and it takes approx. 2-3 hrs to get from here to
Wheeling. I realize this is not going to be helpful to those who want to set up on
Thursday. I certainly do not have a problem with you continuing with your set up plans.
Just be aware that you will be doing the initial arranging of display units. I will
be there on Friday morning at 8:00. Please mark on your work sheet when you think you will
be setting up.
I am also attaching an inventory form. As some of you will note, this
is the same form we use for the Ripley show. If you know your marketing number
include it. If you do not know or do not have one, I will be able to get one for you. The
item code is anything, or anyway, that you can identify your ware. Your price is the
amount that you will be receiving for the item (70%). Sales price is the amount the item
will sell for (your 70% + Guild 30%). All items must have a sales tag that includes: your
artist number, the item code, and the sales price Example: 560-Earrings
$20.00 or 560-12E $20.00
Okay, I believe that is about it. Please
respond by September 20, 2010. I will have schedules done by September 25. They
will be emailed to those exhibiting, unless you do not have email. This saves on both time
and money.
Thanks,
Becky Williamson

ANNUAL SPRING MEETING AND WORKSHOPS GUILD JURY SESSION AT CULTURAL CENTER FOR FINE
ARTS, PARKERSBURG SATURDAY, APRIL 26, 2003
We are pleased to announce that the host of our spring meeting is the Art Center in
downtown Parkersburg. This is a spectacular gallery and educational center and currently
showing is the National Realism Art Show. I know you'll enjoy a chance to see this
important exhibit if you're attending the guild meeting and possibly have time to take in
some other sights in the area. Once again the guild is looking forward to an annual
gathering with interesting artists' workshops in addition to our business meeting,
election and jury session. Please see the attached schedule of our meeting and the other
enclosures.
ANNUAL GUILD JURY SESSION
If you are interested in marketing with the guild at the Mountain State Art & Craft
Fair this July at Cedar Lakes or in the Guild Gallery Shop At The Wheeling Artisan Center,
we urge you to attend the jury session on April 26 at the meeting in Parkersburg if you
have not done so recently. Prizewinner at the Guild Competition automatically receives
juried status for that media. CODA SURVEY
The national CODA (Craft Organization Directors Assoc.) official survey is being mailed
to Guild members and all WV craft artists once again so that we may accurately measure the
economic impact of the crafts industry on the state. These figures are essential in the
effort to gather data to help prove that the arts are important to the local and statewide
economies. It will hopefully lead to greater investments in the arts and crafts industry.
Please plan to participate. The guild is one of the sponsors of this survey.
Thanks for the response!! 29 members, with a wonderful variety of art and craft works,
have signed on to market with the guild at the Wheeling Artisan Center. It's not too late
to join the group as we begin set-up of this sales area. Don't forget to return your
information for the expanded directory or bring it to the meeting. We will use the old
info. and assume you do not care to add anything about studio visits or your availability
to demonstrate, etc. if we don't hear from you.
